Since I live an hour away from Tradex I was fortunate to examine and pick up two 146s a 1939 and 1940 9.3x57. I love the pre-war look of the short schnabel forend, the open grip and the barrel contour. Undrilled actions in VG condition with excellent bores. They are rust blued and the superiority of this finish is visible on a 76yr old rifle. The caliber is great and equals factory .35 Whelen loads of 2400fps with 250gr Hornadys.
After refinishing the oil soaked stocks with Tung oil I was so pleased that I picked up a 146 rechambered to 9.3x62, one of my favorite cartridges. This one drilled and tapped for top mounts but done properly. Since the quality price ratio is ridiculous and I am now single I bought a 1947 640 in 9.3x62. This one is a transitional FN action with the thumb cut and the clip hump but the swept back low bolt handle. The 640 has a beechwood stock, unlike the 146s which have walnut stocks, but with pleasant grain . My buddy found a 640 like mine but with the solid left receiver wall. I had to have one of these beautiful actions and found an 8x57S 1948 in great condition with a beautiful wood. The nicest beech I have seen so far. So in total I bought 5 for myself and 4 for my buddies. Talley crossbolts are on order.
I love Mauser actions and since Oberndorfs are not in my price range I concentrate on FNs. I own Browning Safaris in 7mm Rem, .300H&H,.308 Norma Magnum, .300Win Mag, .375 H&H and .458 Win Mag.All are pre 67,(pre salt wood),long extractor rifles that I consider the finest rifles ever sold over the counter.
