I've been in touch with elgin Gates' son and he's putting together a book on his North American trophy hunting from notes, magazine articles and unpublished stories.

There are many notable people who think the .30 cal magnum are as close as you can get to the all round rifle.

Jack O'Connor "The Hunting Rifle" (Winchester Press 1970):

"Wicked cartridges, these 30 calibre magnums - hard hitting, hard kicking, quick killing - but only if those using them can shoot them. They are certainly just about as close to being all-round big game cartridges as anything...."

Our own Nick Harvey (Australian Outdoors "Gun Annual No 2):

"When I go out to shoot a big animal like a sambar stag I like to use one of the big hot magnums - in fact my .308 Norma Magnum...If you practice enough so that you can place your bullets accurately, it will never let you down. The .308 Norma Magnum is one of the world's best big game cartridges."
