300 RUM is great cartridge for long range hunting,african plain game, mountain hunting. For europian game don´t shoot under 200 m (it is too devastating). If you want shoot for 400 m and longer is better choice 300 rum than 300wm. I made some rifles and rebarreling in this caliber and other RUM (338 and 375). My suggestions are barrels 26 inches minimum,28 better, 29,30 best. Twist I prefer 12, is better for 180 grain bullets and give less barrel pressure. Good choice is 180 gr barnes TSX in velocity around 1000 m/s (3280 f/s). Reloading is necesary because standard rifle barrels have great bullet jump so factory made ammo don´t shoot so well. Recoil, if you use longer barrels and lighter bullets (180 or 190 gr) I think it is OK.
