Too bad Chuck Hawk got it wrong. Until Weatherby came along, the magnum was a range extender, not energy multiplier.

In practical hunting applications, Velocity = Range, Weight = Energy.

The .300 WM was designed to extend the killing energy range of a 30-06 for a given weight.

If your game is only 100 yards, the two are ballistically equivalent, regarding killing; 250 yards - totally different matter.

The .404 Jeffery and .375 H&H produce 4000 ft/lbs, but I much rather shoot a Buffalo with the 400 grain projectile at 40-80 yards.
