My mum was scratched buy a bat awhile ago whilst visiting us in Katherine. We rushed her to hospital and she recived a course of injections. I've done a bit of research on the virus and here's some of what I've found out-
Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABL) has been found in several species of flying fox and bats. Six types of lyssavirus are recognised through out the world, the most well known lyssavirus is rabies, which is closely related to ABL. There have been two deaths from ABL in Australia.
ABL is transmitted to humans via bites and scratches that provide direct access of the virus, in bat saliva, to breaks in the skin. The virus cannot survive more than a few hours outside the bat. Bat urine, faeces or blood does not spread ABL.
