Rabies around the world, a mouth-watering subject

I was just curious how much of an issue rabies is in the outback, and what if any succesful measures have been taken to prevent it. Here in the middle Atlantic states of the USA its quite a problem, the urban legend is that the epidemic was caused by racoon hunters who unknowingly brought up infected wild racoons for hunting from Florida and turned them loose. I think it might be true but irregardless its a nightmare, racoons, foxes, possums, squirrels, stray cats, beavers (yes, LOTS of beavers seem to get it), bats, just about any mammal that likes to fight or gets picked on. (I hear divorce lawyers and anti-gun activists also exhibit the symptoms from time-to-time as well, but not much research has been done on them; as all the other above mentioned mammals tend to be both better liked and more rational.)

One thing thats worked well here is dropping racoon food bait which has been laced with rabies vaccine, since they've been doing it the numbers have been dropping. Just wondering what the situation is like in the rest of the world.
