I carry my Martini (.17HMR) with a round in the chamber and the lever 'down', where it rests and resists closing due to the caming action of the main spring. The top of the extractor holds the round in the chamber. Merely pull the lever up, cocks the rifle - aim and squeeze off the shot. It's quick, safe and quite silent.

I do not trust "Safety Dodges" as Lt,. James Forsyth called mechanical safeties.
