I should note, that there were hundreds if not thousands of these rifles, model 71/76's and 71/84's imported into Canada as moose, deer and bear rifles, for many years right up into the 1950's or maybe into the 70's.
My cousin bought the one I pictured above from a local gun shop owner who dealt in hunting and military firearms from around the world. This was in Vancouver BC in the late 70's & it was a "new" shipment of these old military Mausers.

Dominion (Imperial) Ctg. Company in Canada produced smokeless ammo for them up until then, the 70's, I believe. That ammo had a groove lubricated bullet (Lyman's #) in either 340gr. or 370gr. The velocity was supposed to be over 1,300fps developing the equivalent of the original BP load. It was considerably more accurate in the M71/84's than the M71/76's, of course.
A fellow I worked with here in the North, stopped using his for moose (on and off) in the late 60's or early 70's, after he bought his first .338Win.Mag. Until then, it was mostly a .303 #3 or #4, or that old Mauser.
