As far as I know, that is the name it was given by Smith & Wesson. In the years before they gave them model numbers, each model had a name, for another example, Model of 1950 Target .44, as illustrated a few posts down. This one of mine is also now known as a Pre-21 Model.
If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.
