Rimfire - if you use a Lee Factory Crimp Die, you can crimp a bullet anywhere you want. It doesn't need a crimp groove as the action of crimping is via a collet action, not a pushing action into an internal ring.

My .458 2" had such a long throat, just over 3/8", that I could seat the bullets out the same as a 2.4" Winchester or Sharps case, thus giving me the same ballistics as the longer case - in a Mauser.

The same scenario can happen for a .458 WinMag as noted in Rimfire's post. A longer throat allows seating the bullet out. The normal throat of a .458 was always a long one, years ago.
Check your chamber before you try this.

I achieved 2,060fps with 510gr. Winchesters from a mere 2" long case, along with 2,200fps with 400gr. bullets. The 500gr. load (2 of them) actually beat some of the factory ballistics of the .458 Win. Mag. a while back and matched what Speer chronographed in the #9 manual (1995?) in a Ruger #1.

Lee will make that crimp die for you, for $25.00 + about $5.00 shipping for the .458, the Lott or whatever. I am currently having one made for FatBoy's 8x68S Magnum. They will have received the order by now.
