In India there is and was water buffalo which is the same more or less than the Australian animal. Some domesticated for farm use and some wild.

They also had a wild cow/bull called a Gaur, and also called seladang in Malaysia. Sometimes referred to as "bison" by some of the early writers.

Australian water buffalo came from Timor I believe.
