Central European/German hunting tradition is to cover the wound with a branch and insert a twig in the beasts mouth to signify its last meal.

'Waidmannsheil" is replied to with a "Waidmannsdank".

A shot of whiskey, brandy or snapps drunk from the left hand to celebrate.

John there are 2 twigs as a prime duty - and those are given by a comrade to the shooter or the shooter perfoms it himself:

1. Game Twig - last bite - goes into game's mouth from the shooter to the quarry as a farewell to the eternal green pastures...
2. Hunters Twig - twig is diped into blood of the entry wound and put on the right side of the hunters hat/cap...this twig proudly anounces to all that a Big game has been honorably taken by the carrier...

Now onto game itself. Game should be put laying onto its right hand side.
Now - when you are suppose to leave it in the field to get the tractor or other way of transport or whatever, you must let all that might pass near the fallen game know that it was already honorably claimed by a hunter - so you put a twig onto its upper side (similar to the cutting of the Elephants tail).
