Farquharson Firing Pins
      22/05/11 11:13 AM

Finally got crackin on making some new firing pins for the Farqs. Bouldersmith will approve!

This first picture shows from right to left (set them out backwards - oops):

A pin from a PD Farq that had apparently broken and was repaired by drilling and tapping the face then threading in a replacement tip (not present) - not very sturdy.

A pin from another Farq. Either A Jeff or a Rigby - don't remember.

Two new steel pins made to the shape of the second.

And a brass test piece we ran to insure all of the tool paths were OK prior to running on steel.

All of the original pins I have seen have the groove toward the rear. I am not sure what function this serves on a PD - maybe to carry lubricant or just a holdover from some of the Gibbs blocks which had another crosspin which held the firing pin in which is of course not needed since the firing pin cannot come out unless the block crosspin is removed anyway. Some are narrower than others and one gun I have has no groove at all but looks like a replacement. We kept the groove since it may reduce the chances of binding in the block or maybe if grime does creep in around the firing pin, it may give it a place to accumulate.

Now, all that is left is to mill the slots and the top recess where the block crosspin rides.

Original and the new replica pin (top).

If anybody needs a replacement and yours looks like these, let me know. We made these .3665" dia. The original is .3685" and the one from my Hughes is .364" but fits much looser than is needed. We will see if the .3665" is good as an average diameter that will fit most if not all PD Farq. blocks.

He who lives in the past is doomed to enjoy it.
