My first experience with the .260 Remington was back in the '50's when it was referred to as the .263 Express and was invented by Kenneth Waters, by necking the .308 Winchester case to hold a 6.5mm bullet. In my case, I had just bought a 6.5X50 Arisaka rifle which I wanted to somehow turn into a varmint rifle. My gunsmith obliged me by rechambering the flawless barrel with a .243 Winchester reamer. Despite the 7 1/2" twist, the little rifle (I still have it) shoots 90 grain Norma bullets like a dream, and functioned like an overgrown .243 afield after the wiley woodchuck (or groundhog, as it is referred to locally).

Years later, I had a second rifle built on a nice Oberndorf Mauser action, and it proved to be a tackdriver as well. Finally, I had two different target rifles built on Model 70 actions, the first as soon as cartridges other than .30-'06 and .308 became within the rules for highpower competition.

I think it is a marvellous little cartridge and would not hesitate to recommend it for anything its higher capacity cousins, the 6.5X55 and 6.5X57 are capable of.

Incidentally, isn't it interesting how Remington manages to legitimize a wildcat cartridge of long standing (.22-.250; .260 Remington; .35 Whelen) and then as likely as not fails to generate sales in it to any extent?
