I have a number of Baikal/Remington DRs in both SXS and O/U. Your project has fun merit at least for you, and thats all that matters. But, I might suggest you look into having chamber inserts in 30-30 affixed to your 30-06. This would save you lots of cash and dare I say it, many headaches, and in all probability work every bit as well.

BTW, I have an IZH-43 12 ga Baikal Bounty Hunter II with the 45-70 barrel inserts from Tangfolio affixed permanently. Interestng little beast, as it only has 20" barrels. For me, the gun would be far better looking if it had longer barrels, but that is merely an appearance preference.

And I just got my Baikal O/U back from the gumsmith. I had a .308 Win rechambered to 7.62X54R, the Russian battle cartridge, which is a powerful, '06 type caliber. With the plentiful ammo being imported in this caliber, the price is very attractive, and is likely to remain so with the avalanche of Mosin surplus being imported. The ammo is far cheaper than the '06, and the 7.62 is rimmed, an asset for double rifle function. I am well aware the 7.62 is generally .310 caliber as apposed to the .308 of the Winchester round. Often these guns will shot Russian ammo without difficulty, but loading the 7.62 with .308 caliber bullets simply converts it to 7.62X53R, the Finnish cartridge for their version of the Mosin. I do that for a Siamese Mauser I had rebarreled to 7.62X53R and it works fine, of course.

Good luck with your project. As you say, some custom work can transform the basic Baikals into many other calibers and better appearance. Because of the low cost and ruggedness of the basic rifle, one can do this which would not make any sense with most other double rifles.
