DR Build Questions NEED HELP
      21/12/10 12:40 PM

Anyone,

I finally have gotten in my shotguns and have started my project. I purchased both a sauer and simpson in 12 ga. They are very well made guns and are going to make beautiful Dr’s. I also received my barrels from McGowen Precision Barrels out of Montana. I decided on the .405 Winchester as my first build. I have taken off all of the ribs and cut off the barrels. So far so good, my question is the reaming out of the chambers. Nothing is really described in Mr. Brown's book about the convergence of the chambers. Everything says that the each chamber needs to be lined up and finished separately, but the method shown leads me to believe the chambers are completely parallel. I know that you line them up with a dowel rod in the vice, but that would mean they were parallel to each other because if you put the lugs in the vice you cannot move the receiver on a second axis that would give you any convergence of the barrels. I cannot find any information on this. On the forum, Ron Vella’s .303 build says you need to do each chamber separate and cannot mill straight across the face of both chambers because you would not be perpendicular to your threaded hole, which means they are not parallel to each other. Are you therefore adjusting the angle of the head on the Bridgeport to offset this? Mr. Brown’s book says you can also do this operation on a drill press, which means you would have to adjust your vise to a convergence angle. Also with the .405 Winchester I am not sure if I need to bush the firing pins. The shotguns I am using have smaller firing pins and have a pretty tight tolerance to the holes. I would greatly appreciate any expertise on these subjects and I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

Thanks,

Tim
