I guess it's named after William Light the Surveyor-General, on second thoughts.

I must try some of this wine. Has it had any joy at the big shows?

Don't know about the "big" shows. Depends too on if it is entered in many shows, Willows being a small producer.

Light Pass is named after Col. William Light whom surveyed a considerable amount of pre-Colonial SA, and named the local region, Barossa. Actually "Barrosa" but it was mis-spelt. Light served under Wellington in Portugal and Spain fighting against the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars and "Barrosa" was a valley or area in Portugal or Spain. The SA valley reminded him of the Iberian valley.

I have to check which as "Barrosa's" exist in both countries and I have forgetten. However there is a Cornwell "Sharps's" novel which mentions the battle! How's that for a "accurate" "non-fictional" source!

Light travelled through this area and a stone commemorates his passing. He remarked in his journals that the area had grass so high it reached his waist when riding on horseback. I can see how this is possible this spring, as I have been busy mowing down grass up to five feet high and while we had good early spring rains, not much in winter. If it was a wild area, the growth would be considerable.

Also he named a nearby creek, "Duck Ponds Creek" due to the abundance of wild game, waterfowl and kangaroos. It is one of my favourite hunting places today.

Aboriginals lived along the creek with burned out hollowed trees (ie shelters/dwellings) still standing but they will not last too many more years before collapsing. As a five year old I remember using one to shelter in during a very heavy rainstorm.

Light also designed the City of Adelaide, and his statue stands pointing out above the city.
