I just cannot fathom putting a brake on a No.1. I know it has been done, but I couldn't do it.

The No.1's stock design is pretty good for handling recoil, at least for me. Their recoil pad isn't, it's hard as a brick (at least the old red ones are). I think with a good recoil pad, the No.1 would be comfortable in any chambering they offer. If you go to something much more recoil fierce, well, I'd weight the sucker down and find the best recoil pad I could.

I've had No.1's in 338 and 416 Rigby on the large end. If you are going to play with cartridges with the horsepower of the Rigby or 458 Lott, expect you will get rumbled a bit. We all must pay for our sport, in one way or another. Proper stock fit and shooting form go a long way in helping deal with recoil. As does practice.

Of course, I cringed and closed my eyes when Ruger brought out the stainless/laminated version of the No.1. That ain't right and I don't like it one bit!
