The 416 Remington mag is based on their 8mm Remington mag case opened up to 416 diameter. Then, they raised the pressure from the old 416 Rigby levels so they could duplicate the Rigby ballastics exactly. The result is 416 Rigby 400g ballastics and hunting legend in a smaller cartridge.

The only drawback to this is the pressure, as the Remington round has a lot more pressure than the Rigby. This will translate to more barrel wear, although neither cartridge will wear out a barrel since big bores are not shot like 22's.

There is also a consideration that the higher pressue increases the likelyhood of a stuck case at the worst possible time, especially when the temperature is hot. This is also true, but you never hear of anyone having this problem. We aren't shooting cordite these days.

I believe the 416 Remington is simply a modernized version of the grand old Rigby cartridge with inexpensive brass to go along with the package.

That being said, I opted to buy the Rigby. One for the lower pressure, which is always a good thing when comparing indentical ballastics, two because the Rigby has such class and legend associated with it, and three because there is such confidence to be had when shoving such a huge round up the snout!
