There are a lot of variables to consider when buying a Mauser based sporter.
The gun's vintage has much to do with it, as well as the type of action (military or commercial, std or magnum) and the level of extra finish work such as engraving. Special options such as trap grip cap, sight types etc. can increase the overall appeal of a particular rifle too.
Then, you cannot overlook bore condition, wood condition, level of original finish, drilled holes, later add ons and things like that.
It is true that the later C&H rifles don't command the prices the older ones do.

Forgot to mention, C&H is a highly regarded English "maker". Maybe not in the league of H&H, Purdey, Rigby or Jeffery, (in notariety anyway) but they did put out quality.
I think they were pretty much retailers. In other words, they put their name on "trade" guns and then sold them.
I have a C&H 10.75X68 which I thought was quite special. That is before I learned that it was a typical typeA Mauser (which ARE special in and of themselves).
