I thought that, too, and it may be true in some areas, but here we see wolves and coyotes covering the same ground. See the pic I posted above, where both yotes and wolves are using the same trail in the snow.
I am pretty certain wolves will kill coyotes given the chance, but I do not understand all the dynamics of what has to be a complex relationship. I have seen so much mixing of tracks between the two here.
For example, in areas where there are high game concentrations, I am not certain wolves will make much effort to kill coyotes. Witness the case I observed on my place here. But if wolves bump into a coyote on the hunt, it is likely a dead yote. We have coyote track here on our place mixed with wolf track, too, and often wherever ungulates are, so are both wolves and coyotes.
Now, let's wait couple years here, or maybe take a jaunt down to Custer County now. I'm not sure there will be both coyotes and wolves mixing much, that is unless the wolves are crunching coyote bones.
But now, in a few minutes I can have you in wolf track here. And yote track will be there, too.
