I have shot a number of African animals at ranges from 200-250 yards with my 9.3x62 which has similar factory ballistics to the 9.3x74R. Those shots were succesful because I had practised every day for 6 weeks prior to the hunt at ranges from 50 to 300 yards in 50 yard intervals. IMO 200 yards is about the practical limit beyond which impact velocities drop off affecting projectile performance.

The Ruger No.1 is a strong action and you should be able to hand load it safely past what factory ballistics can offer as they are often kept low for break action rifles.

Where the 9.3x74R may have a niche accompanying your double, is as a longer range rifle. Loaded with high B.C. 250 grain projectiles such as the Nosler 250 Accubond which is quite tough, or the softer and older, 250 BT. You should be able to exceed muzzle velocities of 2,684fps comfortably in a No.1 Ruger.

Norma and RWS both make excellent factory ammo and components and also make projectiles in the 200-250 grain range. RWS make the 258 H-Mantle which is an excellent all around projectile for all soft skinned plains game and was IIRC the pre-cursor to the Nosler Partition. The Woodleigh 250 offerings should also be considered.
