The real difficulty with heavier bullets in the .250 Savage is that the twist used on factory barrels was 14", compared to 10" for the contemporary .257 Roberts. Consequently, the Roberts cartridge will stabilize much heavier bullets than the .250 Savage. A 117 grain bullet intended for the .257 is almost guaranteed to fail to stabilize in your rifle.
