I only use 26"--and as stated above--you need that to get the velocity out of the Weatherby caliber--if you use a shorter barrel--say 24" --you are almost as well off just using a 25-06..as the difference in velocity would only be about 150fps..

Interesting observation - back in the 70's, I had a '98 Mauser actioned .257 AckImp (Robert's case blown out) 26" McGowen bl. My favourite load for it was XXgr. IMR4350, 100gr. Nosler Partition for 3,484fps. Moose and deer, no problem - Hammer of Thor with double lung shots. Chrongraphing some loads one day at the range and a fellow showed up with a .257 WTBY on a BRNO ZKK600(or 601) with a 24" bl. He had to use a piece of 2x4 to hammer the bolt open as he presures were way over the top, using a load straight out of the old #45 Lyman book, I think he used then. He also had loaded the 100gr. Nosler Partitions, using, I think 68gr. IMR4350 for - now get this, a too-hot a load for his rifle and only 3,482fps average.
I wasn't impressed with the big fat case - that was my first and only experience with a .257 WTBY. Obviously, along with the 24" bl. he had a slow barrel that wouldn't handle book OR factory loads. Sometimes that happens.
Ripp's TSX load would be increadible for not only deer, but long range elk as well - for a good shot, that is. I've a buddy an incredible game shot, who uses a slow .25/06 with 115gr. Nosler Partitions @ around 2,920fps for bull elk - 1 shot, one elk, every year.
