I figure to hold to the rear of the brain for a shot from the rear. If I fall short of the brain case, I should connect with the spine.

I don't know where to hold for a shot here. The irrigation ditches I'll be hunting are confined enough that I expect to be able to retrieve an animal that makes it to the water, but I prefer to not have to.

Hide damage is not as important to me as securing the animal. Right now I'm planning to use my Ruger #1 International in 270 Winchester with Sierra 130 gr flat based bullets. Of course, for a hunt next summer, I could change my mind.

I know, and many with 30-30s too. I used to read stories about poachers using various home-made sound suppressors on lever-actioned rifles.

I wish you had access to some private-land hunts where I could use my rifle. I'd like to hunt with you, but for personal reasons I will use a rifle.
