Well, I'm not sure Woodward would use an ink pen to scratch out "Gun" and write "Rifle" over it.

It is possible, I have seen that done before on a few occasions, though never on a Woodward label. So it's another mystery..

You can also see that the little block on the inside of the case lid presses right down on the standing sight. Maybe that was put in the wrong place when it was relined though.

Good point, that is another small magenta flag.

Also, as stated above, either the case is not original, the scope base, or both - I would guess both.

I would tend to agree after spending some time looking at what I can see in the pictures, regarding the scope base. Though the case does look like a vintage Woodward double rifle case. I have blown it up and added pointers for other members to review as well.

Is there a cut in the rib for the front scope mount in front of the sight, or is it part of the sight island?

I would think it would attach at the front ramp of the quarter rib which is probably notched and slightly inverted to allow it to slide on. Perhaps set up for a long vintage Davidson scope?

I think generalwar is about right on as far as what Cabelas has into it. Also, once you start scrutinizing it, there are quite a few questions arising.
This is a prime example of "to buy or not to buy". Is it special enough to overlook it's shortcomings? At $15K, which seems reasonable, does it fit in with your own collecting parameters?

Thank you.

My view is: It’s a neat gun, but its been butchered a bit, and the bores are marginal from what I could gather on the telephone. Perhaps a pristine unaltered version would bring $20k or so in my eyes, however if you add up what it would take to make this specimen correct were talking thousands of dollars, and you would still have a altered/repaired rifle with marginal bores, cut stock, etc. Bore condition is extremely important to most folks, including me, so I’m waiting to see what happens with this one.

Maybe we should take a lesson of restraint which generalwar has displayed.
My guess is that he can easily afford it, so why quibble over a couple grand in price?
Simply because he is at a higher level of collecting than most of the rest of us.

Restraint comes from multiple fukups over the years on my part learning what to pursue and what not to pursue, I have learned some very expensive lessons over the years with guns.. Project guns are really not something that makes me excited anymore, and for resale its just a disaster most of the time in monetary terms.

It’s not about the price for me, rather the details I have outlined above. I have interest, just not $15k in interest..

This Woodward could certainly be the pride of most collections - even with its warts - so maybe the buyer will be able to take the next step up. Even at full ask, not a stupid buy by any measure.

This statement is in my grey basket..
