Learning my .470 - II
      01/04/04 06:26 AM

Thanks to all of you for responding to my previous email regarding me "learning" my new Krieghoff .470. I also appreciate your warm welcome to this forum and between this site and the African-Hunter forum I have managed to ignore my work for many hours recently!

I think I may have exagerated in my definition of the gun being stiff. I don't have to strain to break the action or anything but I guess that initially I expected the gun to fall open as easily and smoothly as a good shotgun but from what I have gathered, double rifles don't really work that way.

Perhaps in my excitement I am simply being impatient and from what I am learning I suspect that after 100 rounds or so it will have loosened up more, though I guess I must realize that it will never drop fully open like a shotgun. By the way, as Rusty asked, my rifle has an extractor.

I am still awaiting a few of the reloading components I need to reload for this gun so as of yet I have not fired it, save a lot of snap cap shooting but I am hoping that by this weekend I will be able to fire a few shots through it. It came with the two targets the rifle was regulated with, the first being shot in Germany and the second being shot in PA, after I had Krieghoff USA install their "Break-O" (mercury)recoil reducer and put on their "See-Thru" sights. On both targets the two shot groups (R & L) were 3/4" and the four shot groups were 1 1/2" at 50 yards. That seems impressive to me and I suspect that the rifle shoots better than I will.

Does anyone have any experience with this "Break-O" system? As I mentioned previously, I have shot my .416 Rem. bolt action rifle for years and am curious how the recoil of the .470 will compare and if the "Break-O" will realistically reduce the recoil at all?

Lastly, has anyone had any experience in the field using the See-Thru sights. Conceptually it seemed like a good idea and I like them now as I practice with the snap caps but would like to hear from someone that might have actually used them in the field?

Again, thank you for the warm welcome and I look forward to being a part of this forum.

All the best,

AKPH
