Now I have to figure out how to make 12 balsa lures last me the next 50 years of hard fishing!

I think I used them or maybe an earlier model on my one and only big fishing trip in 1983!

To make them last, do what one mate did. When a fish breaks your line and swims off with your lure, just catch it again on another lure on the next troll past. With the old lure also still in the fishes mouth.
