I Have had a 404 for 30 years. I have shot Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo, Moose and a lot of small animals with it. Mine is a Jeffery and came with no recoil pad, only a steel but plate.

A couple of years ago I broke the original stock and had the new stock made as a copy, complete with putting the steel butt plate back on. It is as easy a shooting 40 cal as exists. It is probably also the most popular large caliber ever in Africa.

Thousands were made for settler and Game Department use and the 404 has killed many thousands of animals, large and small.

My choice for a 40 cal with no close second place.
