On this side of the Atlantic the same problem occurs with jaguars. 5 jaguars that received a collar in Iguacu national park were killed within about a year, after they started to prey on domestic stock.

To a rancher who has 1000 cows a jaguar can eat 25% of his net income! Not even some of the most dedicated researchers would give 25% of their net income to conservation. Thus, the problem has to be solved in another way and it will cost society a lot more if these animals are to roam free over large areas.

Uninateraly deciding (through prohibitions) to send the bill to the rancher is a foolproof way of exterminanting these big cats.
