Roughly,
470 nitro--9.0 to 10 lbs
500 nitro--9 to 10.5 lbs
577 nitro-- 11.5 to 13lbs
600 nitro--12.0 to 14.5 lbs
700 nitro--16.0 t0 18lbs

That's the correct weights according to several discussions I have read. However, if that is theory, it sure may not be comfort, speaking at least from the standpoint of the largest round I normally shoot, the 500NE.

To be comfortable I would agree with some of the other comments and say that for those of us who appreciate keeping our shoulders intact, and our middle fingers on the shooting hand unbruised, I'd add some weight. A half pound, if properly balance, for the 500. That is especially so with the 577, as I's start at 13 and feel more comfortable adding about 12 ounces. My own 577 shooting 'normal' loads is that weight and I find it easy to manage. I have never tried a 'light' 600 and do not own any of that ilk. The one I did shoot was 15 lb 7oz and still was 'stout' to shoot.

Weight alone is not a cure if the balance is off (I noticed this in the Merkel 375, barrel heavy and unbalanced where the 470 and the 500 on the same 'chassis' balanced well with the larger bbls being lighter at the 'proper' end of the rifle. But properly distributed weight will dampen recoil. Dave
