Greener safety - How it should work?
      30/03/08 01:41 AM

I bought a second hand Krieghoff Drilling few weeks ago, and now I'm about to sell it away. I have never before owned a gun with Greener side safety, and I'm a bit puzzled with the functioning of this one.

In this combo the side safety is only for the shottie mechanism but not for the rifle (The rifle mechanism is functionally separate from the rest of the action - it only engages to the front trigger, when the rifle selector knob is worked).

If I put the safety off, and then snap either of the shotgun hammers, I cannot put the safety back on again for the other barrel. The safety can only be put on after the fallen hammer has been cocked again. In other words, if you shoot one of the shotgun barrels you can’t then put the safety back on without breaking the barrels open.

I’m not familiar with the technical details of Greener side safeties in general (e.g. are there variations with profound differences etc.), but I have carefully examined this one. What appears to be happening in this case is that the action of the safety is based on a pivoted square piece (flat bottomed 'U' being upside down), which in its forward position prevents the rear end of sears to be lifted by the triggers. When the safety is put off, the mentioned piece pivots backwards and away from the rear ends of the sears. Then, when either of the barrels is fired, the respective sear remains in the upper position and intercepts the forward movement of the mentioned square piece of the safety mechanism, and also the remaining sear is free to move upwards.

All parts seem to be in proper places, and there’s no play in them. I can't figure out, how it could work otherwise, but it sure is odd if the described condition is the way it should be.

I really appreciate, if some of you could shed some light on this.

Regards,
Saku
