One more absolute beauty from Don S's collection. I am late in posting this, but, had I seen the pics, I would not have waited for so long. Apologies for the delay but I know you'll enjoy them even if I've posted late:

Don should post more details shortly.

Good viewing everyone!

Exquisite rifle. I have never seen such engraving on a stock. The understated gold band on the barrel shank if very elegant. The side safety looks modern??

Now that it a rifle to dream of. Caliber, style, elegance and appointments are those that make pride of ownership in a fabulous piece.

What makes this a very rare Type S is the Deluxe option of factory engraving and stock carving that was offered by Mauser in 1930-31. Only 8 of these rifles have surfaced thus far. This piece was built up on a 1908 receiver pulled from inventory and coupled with a special half octogon half round barrel with full length rib. This option is described in Speed's first book on pg. 193. I found this rifle with period scope mount bases but missing the scope so I'm having Lee LeBas install period mounts to my 6X Zeiss and fit it to the rifle as shown in the mock-up photo. I discovered this piece at a large gundealer in Maine at 25% of it's market value, they simply did not know what they had. This post wraps up my collection for now so I hope everyone has enjoyed the show. I know there are great collections out there and encourage others to post them. Finally, I want to thank Mehul once again for all his help.

Don,

It is really a treat to see these photos of such a great piece of art. I can only imagine the thrill of finding such a rifle, more so actually acquiring it. It is absolutely beautiful and the pinnacle of any collection. While I have great lust in my heart, :^) it is some consolation that it found a home in your collection. Fate is strange and sometimes in life things work out as they should. I appreciate you sharing it as well as the rest of your rifles with the members.

Don, Could you please enlighten us on the side safety. I have never seen one like this on a 1930's rifle before.

Don has one of the most impressive Mauser collections I have seen & seeing this model is a first for me. L&L does an excellent job on fitting these claw mounts although like everything else the price has gone up quite a bit over the years. That is a beauty Don! Hope to post some pic's of some new stuff soon.

m4220: Look forward to your photos, and thanks to all for the kind comments.

Ashok: This sliding safety is original to the rifle and was first offered as an option by Mauser in 1930.

Gentlemen,

It was a pleasure to post the pictures here> I did nothing much and DOn is the person to be thanked for sharing pictures of his rare and beautiful treasures.

Don,

Most of us are hoping to watch your collection grow so that we could enjoy the pictures of future rifles that come to reside in your gunsafe. Thanks for sharing some of the nicest rifle pictures here and I'll keep waiting for you to locate more treasures.

Good hunting, everyone!

Don,

Thank you very much for sharing your collection with the members of NE.com. I hope you have a great feeling of pride knowing how well received your rifles have been.

To everyone, I want to praise Don's act of generosity in posting these photos. While he quite rightfully feels some pride in posting them, we are the beneficiaries of his act of sharing. THERE ARE MANY OUT THERE WHO DO NOT SHARE THEIR COLLECTIONS IN SUCH A GENEROUS MANNER.

Let us all remember that posting is not an act of vanity or bragging. It is an act of generosity and sharing. Without posts such as these we all have less enjoyment. I encourage all to post photos and explanations of their interesting guns.

Thanks,
Curl

Whew! Glad I saved this one for last!!! Although, the real reason, I must confess, is because I've never really cared for 'over the top' rifles. In my few assorted years of Mausering, I've never seen a Deluxe. Its something I would have recognized but not really been interested in. From the few pictures and drawings I've seen, and the way the Germans tend to go with 'more is better and too much is not enough' when it comes to embellishment, they just didn't appeal due to the picture I had in my mind. With all that admitted, I have to say that I would LOVE to examine this rifle!! It is truly magnificent in craftsmanship. I'm most impressed with the quality and detail of the engraving, quite lovely! Great flow and no uber-deep, angular Germanic chiseling. The wood carving is also very well executed. What a great example of quality German art work and craftsmanship!
DonS, thanks so much for posting this and the others, especially the multiple pics of all the great details and the questions they incur. I, for one, have really enjoyed them. I hope you continue to hang around and contribute with your knowledgeable input.

Some new pictures of this absolute beauty courtesy Don S. From Don's e-mail: The photos show the scope mounted to the rifle as would have been proper in 1930. The work was done by Lee LeBas.

Don should post more details shortly.

Good hunting, everyone!

A question here to CptCurl;

I'm no IT buff but would it be possible to create a "sub-forum" within this forum that contains the whole series of the Dons collection all together (almost like it's own showcase) because with time this great collection of posts is spread all over and some getting forgotten way back in the time queue.

I think this collection is worthy of that, if it's possible!

I would second that, it is a good rescourse for people when guns crop up and need comparison to known good examples.

Good idea Stephen.

Stephen and Bramble,

I don't know the answer to your question. That would have to be done by NitroX if it can be done at all.
