What a beautiful stutzen, and a great caliber. Any idea of vintage? Scope maker?

Just consulted my ref. book and Christ F. Triebel operated from 1931 to 1939.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the information, I didn't know but was going to take it apart and check to see if it was dated. The scope is a zeiss zeilklein.

I see your Zeiss Zielklein is mounted with a Redfield Senior base and rings and that someone has cleverly altered the bolt handle to accomodate the very low mounted scope. A very unusual arrangement for a rifle of this type and very desirable. The mount provides the needed windage adjustment for the scope, which has none, and the front base allows the ring to pivot without putting any strain on the scope tube, in contrast to most German mounts with windage adjustment.

Xausa,
Thanks your right, this is the rifle that I posted with the zeilklein before. Dad got the rifle quite a few years ago and it was already set up with the mounts and scope. I can't remember ever having it out of the stock though I'm sure Dad has. Don was able to come up with a narrow time period for me but I do need to check & see if it's dated.

I have four original Newton rifles, and two of them came fitted with the same Zielklein scopes in Redfield Senior mounts. They are very advanced for their day. They also have Newton cocking piece sights, which are unfortunately not adjustable for windage, though the front sights can be moved in their dovetails. The Newtons didn't require any bolt alteration to clear the low mounted scope and the safety is also evidently made with a scope in mind.
The only fault I find with your arrangement is the Greener safety, which I have on a couple of drillings and find very difficult to use, especially in unexpected situations. This could be remedied by installing a Buehler safety to replace the original bolt sleeve safety, which would have the additional advantage of positively locking the cocking piece.

Dale,
Thanks for the pictures. This is NOT AR so there is zero worry about duplication. You know by now that we enjoy pictures of fine guns, and this is an excellent treat that you have chosen to share with us.
Please do post more pictures here whenever you have time. Don't worry about having posted them elsewhere. We do have unique members who enjoy fine guns as collectors and hunters and pictures like these, especially of historical masterpieces would always be welcome.
Good hunting!

Just noticed the tapped holes and the stock notch ajacent to the bolt handle which probably mounted a Lyman #48 peep sight at some time in it's history. It may very well have been the original sight.

german and british mausers look much better with small scopes like this. They don't need a wine bottle for a scope.

Dale, nice and trim.... built on a small ring .. ..the gun could have been thru g&h or some american retailer hence the lyman 48 or so that is missing , i would think it was put on in the states not in germany ive had a few oberndorfs with lymans but they were always bolt release types. the greener safety is real nice i have a type B with one ...paul

Well, I'm going to be picky and say that a handsome full-stocked Mauser really shouldn't be in the Mannlicher section...
Sure is pretty!

Mannlicher? What do you mean? It is a Mauser action and Suhl is located in Germany,or not?

Very nice dale, Love the butter knife bolt, the mannlicher stock, and that scope makes it look very sleak. I really like the way that horn trigger guard works its way down to that grip cap. Classy rig thanks for posting it. best, Dave K

That is not a Mannlicher stock, that is a STUTZEN! You see this stock design by Mauser/Germany, Mauser/Sweden, Schmidt-Rubin,...and by Mannlicher-Schoenauer! That is right, Mannlicher are the best one.
