I just looked on the Hornadys web site they are making 450 NE ammo. They have a #1 in the picture that meens I won't have to build one if they make it. I'll have to call Ruger and see whats up.

I just read an article in American Hunter magazine--page 55-- where they were testing a #1 shooting 450/400 ammo--the groups were 3.5 to 4.6"--with average of 4.02...IMHO, that's a rather large group for a single barrel rifle.

I ment 450 NE 3 1/4 not the 450/400,but that is interresting tho.Sounds like someone is afraid of the gun.I've never heard of a #1 shooting that bad.I know none of mine have. Was that at a 100yds?

I have 3 #1s .300 win mag, 45-70, 375 H&H

my .300 win mag shoots under an inch easily (though I rarely shoot it)

my 45-70 with a particular 300gr HP Hornady bullet and 3031 at the book load for 1800fps shoots sub half inch groups....yea.....that’s what I said…...but my dealer measured them for me because I didn't believe it.

and my .375 H&H shoots an inch or better if you do your part....

the modern #1s seem to do really well...at least all of the ones I've had so far

I love em
Pat

-if someone explains how to do it on this forum I'll post pics of the .45-70 targets

I just had the camara out for another perpose.

This is mine in 6mm BR Norma. Douglas barrel and a reamer from Pacific tailored for 105 grain lapau.
If I do my bit she will go well less than .250 @ 100.

Very nice!! I really haven't worked with any 6mm (.243) cartridges. I'm leaning towards the .243 winchester in a #1 eventually because it is much easier to get brass etc for the .243 winchester than it is the other 6mm cartridges....a 6mm Remington would be nice...but I don't think it's as balanced ad the .243 winchester.

.243 Ackley is nice, just that bit more omph and efficincy.
But that litlle BR cartridge will get over 3000 fps with 105 grainers ( at a bit more than book pressure it has to be said) but the case with the small primer pocket handles it well and the #1 is so strong.

I could quite easily find a 'need' for a Ruger no. 1 with a scope in .450 No.2 NE. But they are probably talking about the 3 1/4"?

Yes it was at 100 yards--it was in American Hunter Magazine--I will have to look at home to see what month it was--but it was recent--in the last few months..
They tested all the new rounds by Hornady--mostley in Ruger Rifles...

It was built by Ragnar Hansen , a gunsmith up here for a frined of mine, and it shoots great plus sine there is much various 458 bullets, its a very versatile rifle, and load, Since Ruger and Hornady is teaming up with the .450 NE and Ruger nr 1 rifle Tropical model now, it has gotten a new life in the hunting and shooting fields

Being one of the chosen few who now has sufficient time to spend on the Internet looking for neat (ie gun) stuff & drooling over the new catalogues & updates to the Gunmakers sights, especially as it is around -45 C here, there is a trend I noticed that may be of interest to some of the members here:

A couple of years ago, Hornady brought out ammunition in .405 Winchester, which, in their catalogue & on theri web-site, was photographed in front of a Ruger No. 1; a year or so later, Voila! Ruger offers #1's in .405 W.C.F.

Same for 9.3 x 74R, ditto for .450/400 N.E. & Now this year they have introduced .450 NE 3 1/4" ammunition. I just sent them a letter, along with the medium rings I got with my new #1S 45-70 to exchange for some double offset ones, asking if they planned to introduce this chambering in their #1 & will post their response, once received.

I will have to check the barrel shank dementions but off hand I do not see why the #1 would not be a good canidate for a .450 # 2 N.E. build. I built a .450 double in this caliber and love it and all the #1 Rugers I have built shot very well with a bit of tweeking. The one ugly spot on the #1 is the hole for the forearm screw and I take care of this with a metal inlay which can be engraved but is easy to remove if needed. If you want to see how this looks it is on the web site customguns.us under custom builds. The Ruger #1 is a clasic looking rifle and I think should be offered in more of the classic chamberings, I wish the #3 was still around also in the clasic chamberings.

It is the small calibers that are the biggest bores.

I visited with Steve Hornady at the show--while he stated the 450/400 has taken off beyond their expectations...he stated the 450 was gaining momentum as well..

Judson,

The 450#2 works just fine in the No.1. I had my factory .458 Win punched out to 450#2 for starters, which worked well. Required the trough in the top of the block to be slightly enlarged, to clear the rim, and of course, extractor work. I wasn't happy with the extremely muzzle heavy balance of the factory barrel, so I've had it replaced with a 25" Lothar Walther tube, and in the middle of a total rebuild of the rifle. SSK did the original work on the factory gun, and did a great job.

Jeff

I also talked with Hornady at the show regarding the 450/400 and the .450. They will be making brass for the .450, but if it's anything like their track record on the 450/400, don't expect much to show on the market.
The initial run of 6000 pieces of brass went so quickly, that they're doing another run of 9000! ............"Hell', I said, "I've got over 1400 brass for my own use, so how do you expect to meet just the demand from Ruger owners with 9000?"
This I could not understand from a company that must have a concept of how many 450/400's are out there.
