Recoil pad replacement
      #90899 - 08/12/07 06:48 AM

Hi all,

I want to replace the recoil pad on my Rigby. The Silvers pad that it came with in 1926 is just too hard. The rifle is painful to shoot as it is. Shooting it with a "Gamekeeper" brand leather slip on pad is not quite comfortable enough, and ugly to boot. When I shoot it using a pad that straps to my shoulder it is a delight.

If you'll notice from the picture, the butt of the stock is curved from heel to toe. The first two people that I talked to about replacing the pad wanted to just saw the butt straight to make it easy to attach a new pad! Needless to say I left there in a hurry.

I'm trying to decide between a new silvers pad (too hard?) or a Pachmayr Decelerator. I want it to be comfortable to shoot and look nice. Apparently changing the pad wont affect the value of the gun.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Armbar.

You can shape the Spacer on one side (the curved stock side)
so it fits the gunstock and have it flat on the other side to fit the pad against.

Have a look at the Limbsaver's as well.

Armbar,

Your rifle would look very nice with a leather covered pad.

When putting on the new pad make sure you sand the pad so it is perfectly flat. The easiest way is to sand it on a flat surface like glass. Use a figure 8 motion until the pad is flat up to the width of the stock.

Good luck.

Corbin

That doesn't help him as the Wood of the Stock is curved,
hence my comment about curving the Spacer to fit the stock shape.

He has already said that he doesn't want to cut the stock
and I totally agree.

Putting a Recoil Pad on that gun wit a curved stock is not a big issue.

I like the hard pads under leather.

But a soft pad under leather can look and work well. (I don't think they look right on their own) In not too long a soft pad under leather will show where the leather bends as the soft pad gives. I don't find this objectionable. I use a soft pad, a Pachmeyer, under leather for a shotgun that sees high volume work in Argentina. Maybe 10,000 round and it going strong, but you can see where the leather flexes.

For the proper fitting of the pad, see JJ Perroduex through Chmplin Arms, where he shares space, or G&H in New Jersey.

Hope this helps.

JPK

I gathered from a stock maker that if you put a SOFT recoil pad under leather, then you should try to use a Thin one as it flexes less.

I use the Silver's under leather, but some want a softer pad. A hunting partner has a decel under leather on a .465 that looks good and works well. I wouldn't cut the stock. If it fits you, leave it alone.

Limbsaver make a 5/8th" Recoil Pad
which will be available Feb which
looks to be about the same thickness
as the one you have on it.

That way you could leave the existing spacer ?

400 and 500,

I do want to increase the length of pull, so a spacer will be necessary.

The guy who does this states that if the decel pad is used, the holes from the Silvers pad wont line up with the original holes. He said that if we go with the Decel pad, he would fill the old holes with dowling and then put in the new screws. Should I be concerned about the stock cracking when he does this? He said this wouldn't happen.

Do we all agree that whatever pad I decide on the value of the gun won't be affected?

Armbar.

BTW... Thanks for all the responses, greatly appreciated.

Redoing the screw holes shouldn't be a problem
at all.

BTW, getting screw holes to line up on any old
gun is hard as they all change.

Re Value, no, it shouldn't affect it at all.

Keep the old pad and IF someone complains,
give it to them with the gun !!!

Check out the Limbsaver Recoil pads - they really
do take away the recoil.

As long as it's done WELL, it shouldn't (J. J. Perodeau does a really good job with these). That said, for that gun, I'd probably want it done so that I could save the old pad and put it back on in the event that a potential purchaser wanted it that way. If the holes are different, then I'd probably go with the Silver's. Given good fit and the stock design that a British gun like that will have, for me, the Silver's is fine up through .450/.470 class guns, and I don't really feel the need for a decel, nor do I notice the difference. It just depends on the individual. You may need a softer pad.

What does this gun weigh?

500,

I will check out the limbsavers for sure.

400,

It weighs 11lbs 8oz -on a bathroom scale. My wife's kitchen scale only goes to 11lbs.
I've never been recoil sensitive and don't want to become so.

Why would you go with the Silvers if the holes are different? Integrity of the stock?

Armbar.

That's what I thought. So much for most "best" British .470s weighing 10 lbs (they don't).

So, it's overweight for caliber by a half to 3/4 of a pound. Once you get the length right, and assuming that the other dimensions are appropriate for you, recoil will be as unpleasant as a beating with overcooked linguini.

Old pads like that harden over time, and that one looks like it's all the way there. Get the length right, put a new Silver's on it and it'll be a pussycat.

So that there's no need to fill old ones and drill new ones. Done right, you can simply remove your new pad and spacer and reinstall the originals if the time comes.

I have the limbasaver and decelerators both--personally I like limbsavers --they just seem to perform better..

500 Nitro,

I can read:)))))) Rule number one when installing a pad is to make sure the pad is flat as most are not. Two years day & night in gunsmithing school did teach me how to intstall a recoil pad correctly. Oh yes, even on curved surfaces. A silvers pad will easily conform to the slight curvature of his stock.

All the best.

Bang....Bang.

I agree with 400NitroExpress, the new Silvers pad will be much softer than the old pad. You might look at a good shooting vest with a built in sorbathane pad if the new silvers pad doesn’t reduce recoil enough.

Ambar,

I would replace it with a silvers pad of the correct size, that fits you, then send the gun to David Yale and have his wife Kathy fit it with pigskin leather. They are the best in the states at pads for hi grades, among other things.

500,

No, this defeats the purpose of using a soft pad in the first place. Special requirement, here high volume dove and duck shooting, special pita, here a visible "hinge" point in the leather. But over lots of rounds this combo has been comfortable and taken the abuse, while still holding up, despite the visible hinge point in the leather.

FYI, I prefer a checkered wood butt for my shotguns, but with the volume of shooting in SA, the checkered wood butt abrades your shoulder in the course of ~1500round/day. The soft pad conforms and there is no abrassion. The leather isnures catch free mounting. If your shotgun fits like it should, recoil isn't an issue, but the abrassion is.

JPK

Sure. You will really like the way it feels and looks on your gun. It adds a bit of class, and seems to help a tad with resale interest. Make sure you use burgundy pigskin only.
