Roedeer Pictures Please!
      #89400 - 21/11/07 06:05 AM

My son and I are pretty fascinated with the European roedeer, having none around and never having hunted them of course.

Can you fella's possibly post some pictures of your kills and mention what rifle/caliber you shot them with and what the range and/or hunting method was?

Interested in the heads and size/weight of the critters. As I understand it, there are some variations between roedeer throughout its range.

My favourite - came at doe call in rut - 4-5 years old - shot frontal 8 m - 8x68S

Older buck 7+ years old - stalking - shot quartering at 60m with 9,3x62

Also older buck - shot from a treestand at 150m with 7,62 Russian

Not mine - but this is what "gold medal" looks like:

Here's a pot-pourri of various roedeer pics taken when I happened to have my digital camera with me. All deer shown have been shot between 30 and 200 m with the 7x64 (my son-in-law's Mauser 66 and my Sauer 202), except the last buck which was shot with my new Sauer .30-06 bbl. Pics featuring Czar, my Labrador, were taken in the dark, using flashlight, after the dog retrieved the deer shot at nightfall.

Wow!

THANKS fellas!!

Very helpful and the dog pic's really help us get a feel for the size of the critters. We tend to imagine them as about the size of a whitetail, but they are quite a bit smaller.

Ever see any that weigh over 45 kgs? Or are most in the 20-30 kg range?

Fascinating antler development, too.

Also, I see you guys seem to shoot them with general-purpose hunting rifles suitable for bigger animals as well. Very interesting.

By the way, Erik, that is smart thinking. A guy on crutches is planning ahead when he "Uses Enough Gun"!!

And if I ran out of ammo, I could always resort to defending myself with my crutches. They had spike on the ends for winter use.

9,3x57 - fully grown roebucks in central EU normal weight is 16-23 kgs, up north they may get a tad bigger...hunting calibers range from 222 Rem up (optimal would be 243 Win or something in 6,5 mm) - I use bigger calibers solely because there are always big guys around (boars and red deer) beside I am always on stand by for a possible tracking and have no intentions to carry two rifles along.

The .243 Win is indeed considered as the made-to-measure roedeer caliber. However, in this country it's legal for roe only as for other big game (wild boar, red deer, mouflon, fallow deer) a caliber > 6,5mm and 2200 J/100m is mandatory. OTOH, I've shot and seen many roedeer shot with different calibers and have found the bigger calibers more decisive in terms of drop down or shorter fleeing/tracking distance).

A bit late but anyway, we all like these particularities.
I believe it doesn't happen that often with roedeer.
These two used to live in the Cantabrian Mountains, north od Spain

Yesterday evening, I spent a few hours on a high seat until I met this interesting fellow at 21:30. He walked away from me, presenting his rump and I whistled, hoping to make him turn sideways. He stopped, looked back and resumed his walking. When he was at 150 m, I had to make a choice between letting him disappear or take a shot I normally dislike. Considering he held his head erect, his neck stood straight up, so I went for it. My .30-06 bullet entered the back of his neck and exited his throat, dropping the buck like a stone.
