      #87787 - 26/10/07 01:32 AM

Hello all

Are there anyone who have hunting information about the .577 2 2/4" N.E?

Can it be used with modern loads and good solids in africa today?

Regards

dino_hunter

OK, OK...!

Here's my opinion on the cartridge.

...again!

In truth, I'm happy to post this as often as NE.com members will tolerate!
My love-affair with the cartridge continues to increase every time I take that Greener double afield.

Thank you all for the information regarding the short .577 NE.

Good to se that I am not the only one, who think it is a great caliber. I think kit will be a good caliber to take to Africa today to. It has more power than the .404 Jeffery, .416 Rigby, .470 Ne and many many more, who are used everyday in Africa, after all games, and yes, I think it will be a good caliber to use even after elephants.

Hi Peter

Yes, when I get it, I will post information and pic here. But, yes, I am seeking to have one made for me. The moose in Norway are VERY BIG! Hehhehe.

I am going to have dp made for me, and I am thinking of the short .577 NE. Think it got all th epower I need, and for all the hunting I will do, in Africa, Australia and Norway..

I know that Marrakai's gun is about 1-14 or 15 twist.

I see Pac Nor has a 1-18 twist barrel. Anybody else supply barrels?

What would be a good twist for this cartridge?

I think this cartridge would make a good round to put on a Martini for shooting whitetails out of weed patches in Montana Stubblefields.

I would recommend the 750 grain bullet instead of the 650. It is more suitable for Africa and will still kill a Moose.

I think the 750 traveling at 1850 giving ~5750 ft/pnds energy + good penetration would be devastating.

Actually if a flat nose 700 grainer were developed it would be great to get the velocity up a smidge and still penetrate. The SD may be tolerable as well.

I would love to see a current manufacturor build such a Double. The Demand would be considerable!!!

Hi all

Thanks for all the information. Well, a 750 gr. bullet at 1800 or so fps is A great bullet. I think it will be good on all game in africa and australia to. And, that makes it good for the moose to.

I'll bet Gerard at www.gscustom.co.za would

do a flat nose at 700 grainer in .585 diameter.

He does it at 650 grn and 750 grn right NOW!.

Wow!!

Imagine a 577 lite in a 10.5 pnd Double with 700 gr GS Custom solids @1900 fps(5600 ftpnds energy) and 650 gr Woodleigh softs-- That should handle most anything below Ele with great penetration and stop Ele in a pinch(700 gr-SD-.300)although no doubt more velocity would be better for Ele penetration(ie recall previous 500 gr 458 WM Ele failures @ <2000fps).The FN feature may help penetration as well.

I would probably choose a different Double if exclusively Ele hunting-probably a 500 NE with FN banded bullets for the additionsl penetration over a 577 lite. For Buff and the rest the 577lite should be fine!!

I had a full tilt 577 3" and I can tell you it is a awesome cart, but at almost 14lbs was a pain in the ass (more like arms).

I think the 577 2 3/4 would be an awesome round built at 10 to 10.5 lbs with GS custom 640 grain at 1850 to 1900 fps. Would still wack you a bit, but I'd bet it would be death on anything shot with it. I would like a modern double in this caliber priced in the 450-470 class price. If Butch would build a double with a rigby style forend lever for about 12-15K he would get an order form me. I dont think he intrested though!

Look at the Fuchs 577 double sidelock under the double rifle pics section of this forum. Thats the type of forend lever.

Ed,

I am pretty sure that "screw type"

lever is a Philip Webley patent.

BFJ,

I dont know why you would call a forend lever a "screw type"? I think you are getting the action mixed up the other parts of the rifle, look up on Hallowell & Company for the different terms, its a great reference.

As far as I know there are 3 major types of forend releases, the Anson push button, Delely (sp) lever and the Lever release ( or as I've always heard it called the "Rigby style forend lever")

Maybe someone here with more experence than me can clarify.

The so-called Rigby-style fore-end latch was patented by Charles Harvey of Wilkinson's (later Wilkinson Sword) in 1866. It was much favoured and widely used by John Rigby (and Thomas Horsley, BTW) but not invented by him.

During the ‘Golden Years’ of double-gun development, there were some 29 patents for different fore-end fasteners registered in Britain alone! The three listed by Ed above are by far the most commonly encountered patterns.

You ask for photos?

Here are photos of three. On the left, a Charles Lancaster .280NE (a Webley PHV-1); middle, a George Gibbs .450NE (a Webley A&W-C); and right, a 12 bore Horsley double rifle.

Thanks guys,

Looks good I love this option on my Douglass, I wish more makers would use this as the forend attachment. It is a very positive strong attachment.

Is the recoil on a par with the .450/.470 class rifles? As a Buffalo cartridge, how important is the 1850 to 1900 fps as opposed to lower BP type velocities (1650-1800fps)?
