Howder Pistols
      #87785 - 26/10/07 01:24 AM

I was told a long time ago about Howder pistols, I may be spelling it wrong but was told they were pistols carried in India a long time ago to use as a last ditch effort against charging tigers. I don't know if I am spelling it wrong or have the wrong name because I can't find any info on these items. Any info would be great, thanks.

A howdah is a sort of a saddle for an elephant. So, a howdah pistol is one carried by an Indian riding an elephant. It's a very large-bore, muzzleloading pistol, usually loaded with round balls, but any large bore pistol could be called a howdah pistol if it is used as one. I've seen double-barreled howdah pistols too.

Thanks for the quick reply, once I realized I was spelling it wrong there is a lot of information available online. Thanks again.

Strawman:
You should find plenty of info on cartridge howdah-pistols too, usually chambered for interesting cartridges like the shortened 16-bore brass-case and short .577s. Marvellous!

Strawman

Do a search on NE with the word "Howdah".

It has been discussed many times on various forums including the double rifle one, and you should find a lot of interesting information. I think there used to be some good photos too if the photo links are still active.
