      #84819 - 29/08/07 01:17 AM

Hi,
Im new here, and there is a good possiblity that im in the wrong type of forum completly but......i will give it a shot
we have a watson brothers 16g side by side, with a number "1" in serval locations in gold, great etchings, good shape. We are having great difficulty finding out how to find the information with the serial numbers on the gun, any further info. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do know that Michael Louca purchased the name (formerly Purdey).
Thanks Amanda

Watson Brothers serial number tables have been published. What is the serial number?

Their published table says 1914.

The table I have is in Nigel Brown's "London Gunmakers", which I believe is now called "British Gunmakers, Volume One". For the year 1914, the numbers are 7699 to 7814. That should mean that those are the first and last numbers assigned in that year. Since your gun falls between them, theoretically, it should be from 1914. However, due to the way that things worked in the trade, that isn't always true. You can only be certain by accessing the maker's records. Most do charge 25 to 35 pounds to do so. The Watson records do survive. The "1" would mean that it's the No. 1 gun of a pair.

The last information I have for Michael Louca / Watson Brothers is 39 Redcross Way, London Bridge, SE1, 1HG. Tel./Fax 0171 403 3367. Last I heard, Michael Louca was still Managing Director. If you've already tried to contact them unsuccessfully, perhaps someone here will have more current contact information.

Hope this helps.

Amanda-

Not much shotgun action on this forum, however, shame it isnt a double rifle!!!

Are you looking for a value on the gun??

I would tell you to drop into William Evans or such, as they seem very helpful, but alas i see your a long way from the UK.

In the US there is a Holland & Holland in NY city......

Best of luck

Ben

I am sure that you know that your gun was proofed under the British proof system. This link may help you if you don't: http://www.basc.org.uk/media/100_proof.pdf

Essentially your gun has pre-1925 Proof Marks. These DO NOT give the chamber length as, at that time, a shooter would be assumed to know from the shot weight - 1 ounce - what they were.

Please be aware that your 16 is chambered for 2 1/2" 16 bore shells and NOT 2 3/4" 16 bore shells which would have been marked as 1 1/8 ounce, I believe, from memory. Therefore even though the service load is one ounce you should not use 2 3/4" or 70mm "shells" regardless of their shot load weight!

The old Eley Alphamax 16 bore in a 2 3/4" case fired the 1 1/18 ounce load, the still current Eley Grand Prix 2 1/2" case fired the ounce load that is the service load your Watson was proof marked for.
