600JDJ,
My 600Nitro came as a barreled action. I have a nice piece of bastogne walnut to suit. It is with the gunmaker (he does metalwork, stockwork and engraving, all beautifully I might add) and we have a full-scale drawing. It is in the Gibbs Farquharson style, so is higher on the rear of the receiver-tang than the Jeffrey 600's. I will get some photos and post as soon as I can. He is about 4hrs from here and I need to visit soon, I travel OS a bit with work and seem to not have enough time (like all of us). I seem to have rekindled my interest in this, particulary with this forum and the beautiful rifles posted. That and people like Tom Turpins' articles! I saw a photo of a lovely Jeffrey 600 that Darwin Hensley stocked in a Guns magazine many years ago (I kept the article), I'd love to see more pictures of it. The Jeffrey's seem to make for a slimmer (not as high through the wrist) upper tang look IMHO.
I will have to get some dies, some brass from Bertrams, and of course Woodleigh bullets, and get ready for when we need to file the sights. I'm not sure of a load, I will probably sight for standard (1950fps?) loads.
Anyone have an (preferably) Australian source for 600Nitro dies? Also i need some 470 Capstick brass (another project!). I'm not sure if I can import brass from the USA without a permit, any ideas?
That 600 OK brass looks great. How far did that softpoint travel? Might be a good pig load! Who's side-swing safety did your gunmaker use?
Regards,
Chris

That sounds like a cool outfit. You'll have to put up some pics when you can. Here is the ram that took all 8000 ft./ lbs. He was facing directly away from me and I gave him a classic "Texas Heart shot". That bullet pulverized his left hip, blew a massive hole open out the left side of his body pushing a long line of entrails out the hole, carried forward straight through and ended in his upper right neck region. The side facing the camera looks perfect, the other side looks real bad. The impact tossed entrails out into the tress some feet away from where he stood. When opened up, the wound cavity was unbelievable. I would estimate penetration to be around 3+ feet.
The safety is made by AHR themselves and is a 3 position type. One small detail Ed @ AHR does on these big guys that you don't appreciate until you fire one, is to set the trigger farther back than on the original action. This help keep the bolt from slamming your knuckles under recoil as well as giving a larger opening for gloved use.

It arrived . It's a work of art. I've loaded up some rounds and will head to the range for a test drive. I'll give a range report asap.

I went with 155grs H-4350 that according to Ed @ AHR went through their chronograph at 2150 fps. I'm going to run it through mine maybe tomorrow at the range.

Well I finally took it to the range today. It's a beauty. Handles just as I wanted, weight is good to carry all day, recoil is strong but expected, plenty managable and less felt than my Ruger #1, sights are dead on at the 75 yrds tested and speed was 2048 fps for 5 shots. The target was the 75 yrds with the front leaf. The one picture shows a hit to a water jug that blew the sod off down to rock from hydraulic blast, not bullet impact. Amazing

Thanks Bigdog. I put a little over 30 rounds through it and it performed great. That speed looks pretty good so I think I'll leave it for now. I don't think an extra 100 fps will gain me much but I know it's there if I change my mind

I think 8300 ft.lbs of energy with a 900 grainer should take care of all varmits, even the really big ones!

Well, here she is in full battle rattle, without sling however. The sight are set good, now the scope. I think I'll zero it dead on for 80 yrds. That should be a good zero for this little guy. I've found that the lower heavy duplex then makes a pretty good hold point if shot stretch out to 200 yards, but we'll see at the range. So far, I really like this scout system. Great visibility and it balances very nicely.
