Zimbabwe--more trouble brewing
      #80780 - 17/06/07 02:39 AM

Not trying to be an alarmist however I received an email and memo from one of my booking agents on this yesterday.. per the ZMNEWS, www.zwnews.com ---7 former officers of the Zim army have been charged with planning a coup against Mugabe--The report states the officers are charged with "treason". Thus far, journalists and family members have been barred from the "court proceedings"..Albert Matapo,, one of the officers allegedly wanted to recruit as many soldiers and officers as possible to overthrow and take control of the goverment.. This is the FIRST case of actual soldiers being arrested in a possible coup..

Zims goverment allegedly passed a bill on Wednesday which allows the goverment to monitor phone calls, emails, and mail to protect "NATIONAL SECURITY"...

It would appear this thing is slowly, or rapidly, depending on what happens next,, heading south .. World goverments are also getting more involved in what is happening in this country which could hasten the overall outcome..

As many of you, myself included, may be planning or have a hunt booked there..thought this might be of interest to you..please log on the web site above for the complete story.. again not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill--but better to know now than later...

Thank you

Ripp

I hunted Zimbabwe last year and had a wonderful safari, but I pretty much saw the handwriting on the wall. Until Zimbabwe is fully stablized, I'm hunting elsewhere.

Fortunately Africa is a big continent, and there remain a great many wonderful safari alternatives in a number of other, more stable countries. Zimbabwe isn't the center of the safari universe..........

Guys

Before I comment, I and everyone else here in Zim knows that the situation is a horses ass. We remain positive by telling ourselves that things can only get better, and by focusing on keeping our businesses/jobs going. The point is that I'm not trying to deny the state of the nation, nobody is. But....Ruling party publicity stunts disguised as 'coups' are commonplace in Africa. This has happened before in this country, not so long ago. Bear that in mind.
Whilst I agree with allenday that Zimbabwe is not the center of the safari universe, I know many guys will back me when I say that we still enjoy great hunting here. The sad thing is that as more and more hunters write off Zim, our chances of surviving in this climate diminish. Please do not give up on us yet, we are not ready to throw in the towel.

Dave

The political status of the country is certainly concerning.

What aggravates the %#&* out of me is that I signed onto a DG hunt in Chewore in Sept 2008 with a heavy deposit on a 15 day hunt--not looking good!!

Hope things stabilize politically to allow survival of all Zim Safari outfits cause no hunter wants to fly into the middle of a gov't coup or civil unrest-tends to be bad for ones health!!

Dave,

Not giving up on you guys--wishing you all the best actually---As you can well imagine, we can only go by what news we hear on this side of the pond... I also have a hunt booked there in May of 2008 with Chifuti Outfitters for lion, buffalo, croc. etc.. and I also have placed a rather substantial deposit--soooo.. just a little concerned...as it stands now--I have been there several times before with all this crap going on--unless it gets a whole lot worse I plan to be there next year...

Best of luck--if we can do anything to help out over hear please advise--

Cheers,

Ripp

Hope you guys can get through all the political crap cause its not only affecting you but the whole tourist economy of Zim--

I have an Ele/Buff hunt setup in 2008.All preliminary reports from the Chewore region of Zim suggest primo hunting just waiting to be snapped up.

My outfitter says that the concessions come up for ??bid/negotiation in 2008 and with that secured and the political BS squared away they are rockin'--

Hang in there guys!!

Correction--The bidding for the Chewore concessions will be July 13th per S Duckworth of Mokore Safaris--

He stated no problems with gov't except occasional roadblocks looking for illegal Diamonds. The PH's families spent considerable time in Harare and have noted no riots or civil unrest.

Just FYI--I received a call today from Chifuti Safaries booking agent--per my email I sent them last week.. I was told nothing has really changed from last year or the year before--still the same sad state of affairs but one can definetly still go there..Tim (the booking agent) said he just got back from 6 weeks there and had no problems what so ever--for what its worth..

Thank you,

Ripp

Rip, are you following in prima donna footsteps? That is so sweet!

Dave, I'm so close and fired-up now, if they do close the boarders, you may have to sneak me in.

Concern has been/is present regarding the gov't and citizen whites with their past treatment of ranch seizures, etc.

I would think the gov't smart enough to realize the dollars and marked benefit of hunters on the economy and on the wildlife source and safeguard hunters/hunting.

I would think the "white hunters" would be thought of favorably by locals due to the meat associated with their hunts.

Hopfully things will get sorted out in the next several months to the Zim peoples and hunters benefit---

I am how did you know???

As to Zim--they are smart enough to realize the hunters dollars which is the only reason we are treated the way we are when we go there--don't kid yourself--to a certain extent the know precisely what they are doing--they just don't know what to do with it once they've got it...

Rip, I hope you at least do a better job of soldering your break on your rifle.
