Finding The Right One...
      #73749 - 13/03/07 01:14 PM

Well men as I continue my search I must say that locating

DR's built on the Webley A&WC action that are for sale is

NOT easy! Now the examples that use the Webley PHV-1

are a little more visible, but still NOT falling on top of

me. And further, the rifles I am finding are HEAVY for the

caliber they are built in. On I go. All of you who have had

eyes open, I appreciate it.

BigFiveJack,

I wouldn't limit yourself to just Screw Grips.

I would seriously look at the PHV1's.

Hi Nigel,

I certainly am open to the other action types, sorry to

have sounded like that is not the case. I am confident that

I will find a good servicable rifle to hunt with, such having

decent enough looks that I would not be ashamed to be seen

with her at the high school prom. She need not be the "Prom

Queen" - but she'll need to look nice enough that I need not

cover my eyes when caressing her curves...

BFJ,
Something will turn up soon enough I'm sure.
Like 500 Nitro said, don't dismiss the PHV-1 Webley, they are a very good action, one of the best.
In theory the A&WC screw grip is better, and you can count on it that it takes more hours to build than the PHV-1, but both types are very strong and very well designed.

Best of luck in your search, I'm sure there is a Webley out there somewhere with your name on it!

Would you consider the H&H sidelock 500/465 currently at Champlin Arms? H&H installed new barrels in 1991, so there are no vintage steel issues to be concerned with regarding the barrels, and it has that fine case colored sidelock look and an excellent piece of wood.

500grains

That is very nice gun - have looked at it a couple of times.
It looks very similar to one I sold last year in a smaller calibre.

I just love the shape of H&H Doubles.

Jack,
your not the only one waiting !!!

Jack,

Perhaps the bass boat, the 4 wheelers, the Harley, the camper and a safe full of guns could be sacrificed to enlarge the budget just a bit?

Or perhaps the wife would agree to work double shifts for a year or so?

Alternatively, this Winkler at Cabelas is a bit less expensive than the H&H.

Dan,

I just bought the video you're in with Buzz, very

cool. I do think that I will stick with a U.K.

rifle.

Nigel,

So you're ascending to "Rock Star" status with your "Vault

Jack,

I would gently suggest that you revise your budget upward to get what you are looking for.

To take the pulse of the market you might consider looking at the very plain Rigby on a PHV-1, chambered in .470 Nitro that just sold in the Julia auction this week:

Rigby .470 NE

Described as this:
Quote:

*CASED RIGBY BIG BORE DOUBLE EXPRESS RIFLE. Cal. 470 Express. SN 17637. Fine dbl rifle with 28” bbls, flat serrated rib with ramp mounted, caterpillar front sight & platinum line, 3-leaf express rear sight, one standing, two folding marked “100 to 300 YARDS”. It has doll’s head rib extension with third bite, dbl underbites, extractor & dbl triggers. Mounted with very nicely figured, English walnut with checkered, splinter forearm that has a lever latch and checkered pistol grip stock with raised side panels, 14-1/2” over a crystallized, leather-faced pad. Receiver has light arabesque pattern engraving around hinge pin with a dbl border line and maker’s name on each side. Left bbl is marked with maker’s name & address and right bbl “SPECIAL 470 BORE BIG GAME RIFLE / FOR SPECIAL CORDITE CARTRIDGE AND BULLET 500 GRAINS”. Bbls are nitro-proofed and marked “CORDITE 75 - 480 MAX”. Inside forend iron, on bottom of both bbls and on standing breech is marked “CLASS D”. Accompanied by a green, felt-lined trunk case, compartmented for bbls & stocked receiver with a hinge covered compartment in left rear corner, embossed on the lid, “MOREHOUSE STEVENS”. It has maker’s label inside lid. Drop at heel: 2-1/2”, drop at comb: 1-1/2”. Weight: 10 lbs. 14.72 oz. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbls retain about 90% glossy bright, orig factory blue with majority of losses from a chemical splash on left side, over chamber area, otherwise virtually all of orig blue is present. Receiver retains 95-96% brilliant, orig factory case colors with one fingernail sized spot of flaking on right side. Triggerguard & floorplate retain virtually all of their glossy orig blue and grip cap about all of its brilliant orig case colors. Wood is sound with minor handling & use marks with a series of small bruises by right side panel and retains virtually all of its orig factory finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. A scarce & very desirable dangerous game rifle available without the six month to one year wait. Case shows light to moderate wear with some crackling on the lid and light edge wear with some minor soiling inside. Straps are replacements and two front keepers on lid are missing. 4-30158 JR68 ($22,500.00-$32,500.00)

This rifle sold for $25,875.00.

I have found that sometimes you have to make a lunge to tackle the gun you really want. The market is truly a moving target. Like a beagle chasing a rabbit, if you are always five steps behind, the rabbit is always out front.

Good luck with your search.

You mean you didn't buy it !

Identical to my 500Nitro's.

Jack
As I said to you the other day, don't wait until you get "on line", after of course due dilligence" just buy an airline ticket and fly somewhere to look at a gun. Even if it costs you US$500, it is still peanuts compared to the price of the gun AND if it's the right gun, buy it.

Too many guns have been missed by people becuase the will spend $20k on a gun but not $250 - 500 to go and look at it !

No I didn't buy it. I'm in a holding pattern just now. I
thought maybe it was you who submitted that bid.

C.C.

To adjust the budget right now is not doable to any real

degree, maybe 4% at this second. I am just a layman. As I

said elsewhere, if by MAY 01, I've not bought a U.K.

vintage rifle, I'll be looking at examples from the rest of

the planet and be done with this "hunt" within the closing

date of MAY.

Nigel,

You could HELP a little you know.

JACK,

As 500Nitro said, "You aren't the only one looking!" I'd like to find the exact thing that you are searching for.

500Nitro,
Since Jack plans on buying some double before the end of May, please don't get your "rear in gear" until early June!

Keep me in mind. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff

I have a PM list of about 8 people and will add you to it.

"Since Jack plans on buying some double before the end of May, please don't get your "rear in gear" until early June!"

Do you want me to send my bank Details now ?
Small "incentives" could induce me to "lose" my key
for a month or 2 or allow me to go on holidays
to the NT for a 2 months.....with a couple of my DR's !

Jack - incentives work both ways !

Is there a reason you are not pursuing the Army Navy 450 no 2 at Champlins for $15K?

Dan,

Call it being, "just to strict" or what ever, but right now

I am calling the A&N 450NE for 15K at Champlins "over weight"

@ 11 pnd, 5 oz. My "line in the sand" for 45 - 47 cal rifles

is 10.75 pnd and I'll go 11 pnd even for 475 #2 and up to 11.5

for 500 NE. So call me "crazy" you won't be the 1st...
