My pre-64 Model 70 .30-06 Project for my Son

Gentlepeople:

I thought I would post an update on the .30-06 rifle I am putting together for my son. The barreled action was just returned from Roger Ferrell and I now have some additional photos to share.

First, specifics:

Pre-64 Model 70 Winchester Action
Krieger Barrel chambered for .30-06 Springfield
NECG Rear sight with one standing and two folding blades on a quarter rib
NECG Banded front ramp sight
Barrel band Swivel
Sunny Hill Bottom Metal with integral box
Denli Exhibition Circassian Walnut blank
Bill Soverns is doing the stocking to include a skelton grip cap and an ebony fore end tip.
Leupold Vari-X III 2 - 8 X scope
Quick Detachable Talley Rings and bases

I am going with a British Stalking design for the stock, similar to the one in this photo:

That sounds (and looks!) like a great set up Clark. Your son is lucky to have a father with an interest in nice guns.

You may have mentioned it previously, but how old is your son, and what will he be using this gun on when it's finished? Is it his first rifle?

I bet both of you really enjoy the building of the rifle together.
Even better to hunt together later with that same rifle to give him further memories for a lifetime!!

He will have a certainly have a functional beautiful reminder of great times with his father for years to come---

You guys are going to think I'm nuts, but my son is only 2 1/2 years old. I wanted to do something special for him and since you never know what may happen in life, I wanted to start on the project while there is still air in my lungs and money in my pocket.

Now, I have to let everyone know that I AM NOT building a youth model rifle for my son. This will be for when he is older and the rifle he will (hopefully) hunt with the rest of his life.

With that being said, I'm PROBABLY going to have the LOP of the blank cut to 14 1/2" and have a small red recoil pad installed. This way when he is older if he needs a longer or shorter LOP, it should be able to be done for him without much problem.

I find that 14 1/2 LOP is IDEAL for both my father and I. My father-in-law's guns also fit me nice, so I'm estimating that my my boy MAY have the same LOP as me when older.

Regarding the sights, I plan to have them regulated for 180 grains. I figure that the .30-03 is just about perfect for 95% of the big game he will hunt 95% of the time in North America.

2 1/2 yrs old, that's what I thought. I do remember you posting a pic of him as a toddler some time ago. For a while, I thought you had another son from somewheres else.

Here is the future owner of the rifle. This photo was taken when he was 10 1/2 months old, on vacation in Austria, August 2005.

Where'd ya get the hat?

My son's got his own handgun (Ruger SSM) and a nice .243 that the missus bought me when I graduated from a military school.

Thanks for the kind words. It is truly a labor of love project and I'm enjoying every second of it. Both the blank and the barreled action is with the stocker now. Bill Soverns, the stocker, is using a GAG "British Stalker" stock as a template, with significant modifications to get the stock to look like the Westley Richards above. He'll take photos during the process and I will be sure to keep everyone updated.
