Pedersoli Howdah - ***Photos Added ***
      #71428 - 14/02/07 01:31 AM

For those interested, here is a thread relating to the new Pedersoli Howdah . The weapon is allegedly currently in production though neither Dixie Gun Works nor Pedersoli shows it on their web-sites. They are available in either .50x.50, .50x20 bore, or a pair of smooth 20 bores. I personally would have done some things differently with the design and just made them as .72 cal. guns but we as beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

Best,

John

I'd like to see one for breech-loading centerfire (break action), but perhaps that is just me.

I thought they looked a bit long for howdah's but am not an expert.

I have read that you can cut the .72 cal guns down and restock, but DO NOT take my word for it, consult the applicable regulatory authorities.

In any event, it is a neat idea and I appreciate the post.

I think these are going to sell real well.

I would like one in .58 to match the long arm (or a .72 as mentioned).

Interested to see how the 20b does with roundball

I'd prefer to see back action locks.

Much prefer those back action locks behind a Jones underlever

Just released the Pedersoli Howdah

Pedersoli Howdah Hunter

Howdah Hunter Pistol

Classic large caliber double barrel pistol in the English gunsmith school style, used at close range to stop tigers which commonly leaped upon elephants carrying hunters in a Howdah in the far away colonial territories. During the first British colony government period in India, starting from 1840, the Howdah pistols were preferred by the army officers detached in the widest territories of the Empire. Blued barrels. Engraved locks featuring wide animals in their natural habitat, case hardened colour finish. The walnut pistol grip stock is checkered and finished with a steel butt cap.

Right on! The bar action locks just don't quite get it.

If I were to buy one of these (and I might) I would re-finish the barrels to brown. The blue finish is bogus.

Wouldn't it be nice to have damascus barrels?

.58 cal should be made in this for sure.

Interesing to see and they deserve congratulations for bringing out this pistol - however. It is evident Pedersoli still does not know the reason for fences behind the nipples. The hammer noses are suppoed to curl over the fences before engaging the nipple - they got it wrong in the 70's and still are producing it wrong, 30 years later - obviously they know didly squat about doing the job properly. This is kin to polititions make hunting laws.
; One more cut with a milling machine before drilling and tapping the nipples is all that was necessary for them to get it right - When they get this simple aspect of breeching down right, then I'll consider buying one of their guns. Were it not for this goof on breeching, I'd have purchased their 12 bore side by side long ago.
; Here's a proper breech.

: Here's another one.

When the Pedersoli ML double rifles retail for $ 800 this should be a fairly inexpensive "howdah" pistol to buy. I can see the experts here are not impressed with the design and its lack of attention to authentic howdah pistols - perhaps, we need to look at this as what it is: a cheap interpretation of a howdah pistol from Pedersoli, one that could be shot and abused as the owner pleases without any worry about damaging a valuable old gun.

Even as a learner and happy non expert, I can see the point in buying one if someone has a 50 Pedersoli double ML though the other calibre selections do seem to be weird. I'll check with Cabelas when they would have these out. It might be fun to have one of them even if they are not an authentic design.

Good hunting, everyone!

Mehul,

My biggest problem with the Pedersoli Howdah is the caliber. Why would they call such a small-bore gun a howdah? The experience of shooting a howdah is of firing a ball that reminds one of a golf ball :-). I believe Ross Siefried wrote an article on shooting a couple of howdahs once.

To be fair, I believe it was Hamilton Bowen who built a howdah revolver! It was only .51 - .52 caliber, though he had to get permission from BATFE to build it, and could not offer it for sale. In a modern cartridge, it was considerably more powerful than a black-powder, patched-ball gun of similar caliber, though. If I recall correctly, it was built on a Ruger Redhawk.

Take care, Tom

Tom,

I fully agree with you. Its just that these guns look like a fun companion gun to have to a Pedersoli double rifle - the name used by Pedersoli is inapt and so is the design from the many posts criticising it here. I guess Pedersoli got carried away because in today's smokeless era a 50 cal is a "big" calibre. Illinois state legislators even tried to ban 50 cal muzzleloaders recently and they may well try to do this again in 2008, so Pedersoli are not the only nut cases with these ideas, I guess.

One fine gentleman who tried to revive the Howdah Gun idea in the late 70s was Lee Jurras and I had some communication with him some time ago. A really nice man and he used Contender frames to build some really nice looking guns. Then, J D Jones took over and he has been making Contenders and Encores and Hamilton Bowen being another great genius would have decided to build Howdah Revolvers using his revolver making expertise... Would you have any pictures of Mr Bowen's Howdah Revolvers? Please do post them here if you do.

Thanks and good hunting!

I have a barrel and a breach plug for a Howdah pistol that I hope to make some day.

It's 4 bore.

It will be muzzleloading and have a backaction lock. Stocked in very hard walnut.
It's just a "fun project" and not an order. So I have not gone ahead with it yet, but it would be truly impressive when it's done.
Need someone with a very small brain to test fire a full charge in it for me.
No experience necessary.

Some time ago I made a smooth boer single barrel Howdah pistol 12 bore, proof to shot round ball over 100gn of FFFg.
Not very traditional as it was an underhammer pistol. It looks impresive and shoots OK.
I will try to post some pictures if it is any interested.
Thanks

Howdah or Traveling Pistol, it all depends on what you want to use it for (see last picture). I consider the long barreled ones traveling pistols since Howdah pistols are ment to be in a holster in the Howdah and short to manouver in a small space. They are also always large caliber (.577+) in order to get enough UMPH to knock a tiger out of your lap with a load of BP. I have several articles on them and own the first one below (an H&H .600 smoothbore). They kick like the devil and I would not want to be in front of one. If the Pedersoli is not too expensive, I would want it in 20 bore (a lot of Howdahs are smooth since distance is measured in paw length rather than meters). to cut down, brown it and just age it up a little.
