Where have all the jackrabbits gone?
      #66788 - 11/12/06 12:19 PM

Fifteen years ago, I could shoot 50 jackrabbits in a day of walking through the sagebrush. But now I feel lucky if I see 4 jackrabbits in a day. The land is no more overgrazed by cattle and sheep today that it was back then. So I wonder what happened to the jackrabbits.

Cottontails seem more plentiful than they used to be.

They are cyclic I believe. The population builds and builds and builds until it peaks. Predators also build with them. When they peak in population then disease and heavy predation works them over and their number start to dwindle until there are few around and the cycle starts over. At least that has been my unscientific observation.

We have our fair share over here. 2 guys could fill a pickup in 1/2 an hour. Will be going out to do just that tomorrow evening.

Most likely coyote pressure, maybe a bit of raptor or bobcats.

My New Brunswick outfitter just sent me a neat photo of his "hare" haul, he had a pretty nice stringer hanging on his porch with his six month old son.

I guess go to eastern Canada for Thumper?

Taos, what part of Nevada are you finding them in?

They are cyclic and supposedly run on a 7 year cycle, but it has been 15 years since there was an appreciable population so I am thinking there is something else to it.

BLM has been setting poison out up your way for a long time now.
Many of the old varminters here have been complaining of that for years.

Jacks are only lightly making a comeback here in Western Nebraska and in Southern Minnesota where I used to hunt them with a rifle for running target practice there hasn't been a jack rabbit seen in many years.....It's not just there that the Jacks are gone...it's all over!!!

Taos-

I've spent quite a bit of time out by Gerlach

Jackrabbits can be such a menace. At times they're as present as flying insects out there -- seen a lot of 'tourists' run themselves off the road swerving to miss them.

Jackpot's just about in Idaho... what's the elevation?

has your sage brush been burned resently. They must have it to thrive. I hunt rabbits on the ore nev border . Last hunt /shoot 5 months ago 750 rounds in 2 days.
