WTK: Positive aspects of the single shot rifle?
      #64957 - 31/10/06 08:21 AM

Newbie Question: Okay, so I have been looking at the Merkel K1 "Stalking Rifle" series and would like to know the positive (and say the negative!) aspects of a single shot rifle. *There is currently an offerring of a K1 series in various calibers with a Swarovski scope (3X10-42mm) for under $4,000.00....much cheaper than a nice double rifle as currently manufactured. The single-shot premise interests me and the K-1 is a handsome rifle. Thank You.

Depends on what you plan on doing with it...

I have never shot at anything that could eat me so I never "needed" that second shot, but I can't think of too many negatives.
They could be too light and therefore tough to shoot well offhand, although with a bit of practice that should be less of an issue.
They may be less accurate due to the two piece stock, but I doubt that your main quarry will be woodchucks. (although I did take one with my #1 in .375H&H)
The scope is mounted on the barrel which is a good thing as is the usual tang safety.
If you practice often and get used to reloading, it won't leave you with too many reasons not to go that route.
If a set trigger is an option, get one.

Cheers.

Tom

Where did you see this deal?

I wuld love a light caliber SS for a stalking rifle on Mule Deer, Goats and maybe a Sheep.

I see no negatives on a Deer caliber.

Woundn't touch one on DG though.

GSI -Merkel has/had some SxS 8x57's on sale for around $4000. Don't know how many or to what dealers they went, but this is within the last week or so. They are the 141 Mdl in various configurations. Mine is 8x57R with single non-selective trigger, ejectors, red flourescent front sight, single standing rear, humpback (european) stock,no cheekpiece, very nice dark wood,21" barrels, with rib containing blocks for scope mount. Don't know how many they had if other calibers or any other specifics.
