A German beauty
      #64111 - 16/10/06 11:53 PM

I must confess, that I have recently fallen in love. On last friday afternoon I met an about eighty year old German beauty. She has some scars, and indeed she seemed to have had hard experiences of life together with rough friends. But beauty doesn't decay, nor does charm. I saw her and was as hit by a flash from a clear sky.

She is an old J.P.Sauer Mauser from German Suhl in 10.75x68 mm Mauser. The barrel is ribbed, the bolt is case hardened, bolt stop peep sight, oldfashioned German stock with panels, the barrel pinned to the fore arm, steel grip plate, hinged magasine with lever latch, set triggers and beautiful curled wood. But wood is rather worn by being carried at bad weather moose hunts in the swedish mining districts of Bergslagen and perhaps on some safaris, there have been drilled holes for a side mount and some regrettable fellow has grinded the bolt handle for the scope. And, last but not least I am not quite sure of the condition of the barrel.

What is your opinion? Is 1800 SEK (i.e. 200€ or 250$) an appropriate price for it in that condition? Should I get it or leave it? All suggestions and experiences areare welcome!

Best regards,

mZugu

sounds lovely. I saw a simmelar one (original Mauser), supposed to having belong to Adamson (???) from "Born free" fame, and am contemplating buying it as a 2nd backup gun, rechambering it to .404 Jeffrey.

Hallo mZugu,

last year I´ve let build me a 10,75x68 with new Lothar-Walther-barrell and a RADOM-M98 reciever. It´s a great gun. I hope that I can shoot this autum my first game with it.

Here in Germany the 10,75 was befor WW II very popular, Mauser takes it as a standart-caliber for their huntingrifles.
A lot´s of them was sold to Africa. The greatest time had the 10,75 befor WW I in the german africa-kolonies.
Alot of swedish hunters bought 10,75rifles for moose-hunt. They were so satisfied about the guns and the calibre that they gave them the nick-name "dödens synrör"***.

The price is very low. Normaly in Sweden it is around 5000skr, and here in Germany 15 000 - 20 000skr.

When you will reload your ammo, look at C-H-H dies. They just costs the half part of the RCBS dies.

hälsningar från Tyskland
Manolito

*** for our non-swedish-speakers:
"dödens synrör" means "skope of the death"

Ndumo,
If this Rifle was used by George Adamson it might be best to keep it origional.

ozhunter, im not too sure if the rifle was used by george adamson, the name adamson (with the d the wrong way around), appears on the magazine plate. Its the previous owners story, and anyway, the rifle has seen better days, and has been reblued in the not too distant past.

That is an excellent price and the gun is definitely worth saving.

It seems, that I should bring the old beauty to my cabinet. I will negotiate with the dealer next week, and see if I can make a good deal still better. I will also examine the bore, if it is in good shape. But I think I will take it with a bad bore too - it will be possible to rebarrel it or to rebore it. But I am not going to put a stainless barrel on it and not to stock it in synthetics - never!

I will be back with some photos in due time.

Thanks for your postings,

Hello mZugu,
we have an original Mauser custom made rifle in 10,75x68 since 100 years in our family. Is it possible to get some photos from your Sauer rifle in the same caliber?
regards Johann from Austria
