What is reasonable grouping?

What is a reasonable group size for a good double. I have seen one where the seller represents 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards, and 2 1/2 inches with a scope at 50 yards.

I know about zero on the subject of doubles-

What sort of group size do you guys get/expect from youe rifles?

Realistically, anything under 2-inches at 50 metres with open express sights is a good shooter. Some will do 1 1/2-inches or less, but probably not many. With a high-quality scope fitted, you should be able to cut that group size in half.

A big-bore double which only shoots 3-inches at 50 metres probably shouldn't be chucked away, though!

Three pairs of shots off the bench, BTW.

Double it, plus 10%, for 100 metres.

Just MHO.....

To a certain degree, it depends on caliber and the intended use. For the larger bores, I expect them to shoot into 1.5" at 50 yards with a load that gives reasonably close to standard velocity (as adjusted for barrel length). If it won't do that, I have it re-regulated. If that didn't work, I'd sell it and try again. I've never had to sell one.

When a scope is added to a rifle that was regulated without one, groups with the scope are often larger than with the sights. The weight of the scope on top of the barrels dampens the recoil arc during barrel time. Some rifles are more forgiving about this than others.

In my very limited experience 400 is spot on. With a scope you generally have to choose whether the rifle is regulated with the scope or without. G. Wright in his book mentions that with one rifle he shot if he put the scope on the groups "stacked" one over the other. That's been my experience. So a DR that's not been regulated with a scope but has a scope put on will often open up the groups. Now, if the rifles been regulated with the scope the groups will probably be smaller than had it been with iron sights. Also with a scoped small or medium bore you could have it regulated at 10 yards rather than 50 or 75. However, there are not many "rules set in stone" with DRs though...

Note: Thanks Bulldog, yep that 100 there. Well I suppose you could do it at 10...

I think you mean 100 instead of 10 yards...
