André,
Congratulations I envy you greatly, season in Sweden opens 16/8, when was the opening in Belgium?

So, you took the 7X64 for a walk in the woods

Johan,
As always, things are complicated in my small, overpopulated and over-politicized country. Games laws differ in Flanders (Dutch speaking) and Wallonie (French speaking). My hunting lease straddles the regional border, so go figure (different openings, 2 regional hunting licences, etc.). However, our wooded area lies on the Flemish side and thus we are imposed a legal shooting plan (min-max, fawns, does and bucks). Kits and does open from 15/01 to 15/03 (8-4 to be harvested) and bucks from 15/05 to 15/09 (5 planned). It's buck period now and so far 2 have been shot. Between our 5 associates, we agreed to shoot one buck each until 1/09 and thereafter, it's first see, first shoot for the shooting plan has to be completed. BTW, I mostly stalk / highseat roes with my 7x64 Sauer 202, which isn't used on anything else.
I prefer my 9,3's for bigger beasts.

iqbal:
Unless the names have changed in recent times, the Roe Deer is Capreolus capreolus whereas the Hog Deer is Axis porcinus.

This according to Arthur Bentley's text....

....so not even the same genus. I agree their head-gear looks remarkably similar though!

BTW, I meant to post earlier: that's a very nice head for a Roebuck from what I've seen, Andre. Add my congratulations to the list. I like the skull-cap mount so popular in Europe, it accentuates the antlers more than a shoulder-mount IMO. In Australia, we call that the 'European Mount'!

Capreolus capreolus it is and, like our Red deer (Cervus elaphus) is genetically totally compatible with the Wapiti (Cervus canadensis), the Roe is actually a cousin to the Whitetail. I'm not sure wether these 2 might crossbreed, though. It is remarkable that the higher you go to the North of the continent, the bigger these animals become ; reds get as large as elk and Siberian roedeer challenge whitetails in size.

Andre,
I'm envious that you can hunt Roe, I admire that beautiful trophy of yours.
I was fortunate enough to hunt Roe in the UK last year (a long time ambition) and shot three, I was also asked if I was interested in Muntjac!!!
Needless to say I accepted and was able to take two, one was exceptional. I hads the use of a Sako .243 that did the job.
The muntjac are full skulls with the tusks in, less the bottom jaw. I understand what you say about over regulated etc, I have recently move from one side of Australia to another and had to pay the government for a permit to hunt feral animals. I was speechless when they told me as I had never heard of such a thing.

anyway good hunting and Cheers

Chris

Big412,
I 've shot a few Muntjac in U.K. too. The irony is that the first I met -and shot- was a C.I.C. silver.
